Selamat jalan Pak Habibie, innalillahi wa innailahi roojiuun …
Since last week I have been following news about trade war between AS and China. It is global hot issue in this time. Beside articles, I also watch YouTube videos. The news detailly explores starting from focus reports about the trade war, megainfrastructure China silk-road, Huawei, Made in China 2025, Silicon Valley, Shenzen, etc. I analyze that this is more than trade war, it is technology war. Xi Jinping as long-life president of China declared that this communist country will master some high tech such as AI and biotechnology. His words are not just leap-service, many Chinese companies like Huawei concerns about that by doing massive research. Its patents now reached more that AS already did. China also have many more world class companies in high tech such as BYD for electrical cars, Tencent, Alibaba, DJI, and many more. So, actually it’s not only about trade war but tech war. China want to be superpower in technology supremacy in the world.
Several minutes ago I scrolled my twitter timeline then found kawalpemilu.id initiated by Onno W Purbo. He is one of IT expert in Indonesia. Last time I met him in 2017, in Mastel birthday celebration. He is former lecturer of ITB. Because of my couriosity, I google him and watched two videos on Youtube.
He is an inspirator, in particular for me. His life is always dedicated for people through his expertise, IT. He campaign open BTS, open source, and cheap internet for everyone. May sometime I can met him again in a forum.
This afternoon I watched several videos in Youtube about an automotive national company, namely FIN Komodo. Four videos are from Berita Satu showing interactive dialogue between Pak Ibnu (its founder) and Pak Saleh Husin (Ministry of Industry). They are on DK program discussing about how’s condition of national automotive company especially car company. Pak Ibnu revealed that he built whole parts of industry supply chain including mentoring its suppliers like what he said to me two weeks ago. One interesting poin when the host asked to Pak Ibnu about why he was very nationalist, Pak Ibnu said that when he was a child, his father (a military man) invited him to watch a military vehicle exhibition in Perak Surabaya. Then he asked his father, “who drive this plane?”, “a pilot”, his father said. “I wanted to be a pilot”, Pak Ibnu then dreamed to be.
Along with his age, he then asked his father again, “Who is aircraft creator?”, “An engineer”, said his father. Since then Pak Ibnu loved to engineering especially aircraft. He planned to enter aerospace engineering in ITB after senior high school, but his mother asked him to study not far from his hometown. He entered ITS in department of mechanical engineering. After graduate, he joined in IPTN then became senior engineer in there. When this state-owned company was collapse he left this company to initiate a automotive startup company named FIN Komodo. This company focused on building an offroad car that specially used in uninfrastructured road. Right now, his company succesfully developed fifth generation car since started in 2005.
Lesson from Pak Ibnu
For me, Pak Ibnu’s journey is inspiring. His idealism is showed in developing a technology-based company that focus on automotive – his expertise and also his hobby. Even it was very hard in the beginning, he was success to passed it. He deeply believe that what he already done has positive contribution to Indonesia especially in creating original industrial culture emerged from Indonesian engineers. His spirit relatively same with Pak Habibie’s, Indonesian technology ideologue. Second lesson for me as an academician cum researcher in technology management is to create a comprehensive study to understand technology-based company players (mostly SME) to be an impactful recommendation to stakeholders like industry it self and also Government.
Last lesson for me as future father to prepare a legacy to my future children. What’s lesson should I give to them as a sample. The children will look to his parent especially his father about his successful career, more special in how a father see this complicated world. A father is an impiring man like what I feel to what my father giving to me. Finally, to my future wife, let’s always to be a champ. Everything positive comes from our home.
I have just heard a friday speech of Mr. Minister of research and technology in Salman. Since when a Salman speakperson announced who is a speaker in that time, I directly thought that Mr. Minister will cite quran verses that explain how important advance science and technology. Unfortunately, my guess was wrong. He delivered “The important of not to be jealous” as title.
From this I know that formally he is minister of science and technology but objectively he has no enough capacity to understand what science and technology looks like. So what policies created might connect to the science and tech advancement but it just on the periphery not it the heart of the problem. Definitely it is not easy but one and only person who can do this is he/she who always interact deeply about that. In the past time there was Pak Habibie, but after him no one.
There are many persons entering this category, unfortunately they have not enough politics sense so the position always being filled by inexperienced persons who have strong connection with political parties.
Today’s main agenda was interviewing founder of FIN Komodo, a mini jeep car that is excellent run in muddy land. We came to him manufacturing company in Cimahi. I got much lesson here. One thing I remembered that building industry needs high leadership especially and in-deph focus. It then creates culture that differentiate with other. I surprised that he is from Lamongan, same with me. Interacting with him make my idealism greate again.
My book had just published last friday (21/9) this month after spending more than 1 year 2 months to write it. This was my memorable time for me since firstly started writing in 2011. Special thanks for Pak Djoko Sardjadi and Pak Sonny Yuliar for supervising me during my process in writing. It was tiring time for me that frequently made me stressful. Now all of that is paid off. Thank you !
